Rome, ca. 200 AD. Pale green glass drinking vessel of slightly flaring form, with three bands of lathe-cut circumferential decoration just under rim and mid-body. The base is slightly kicked up and the lip is cut straight. Indented base. A very rare form, in exceptional preservation with beautiful iridescence.

Beakers such as this would have been used for drinking, much like our modern glass cups. In ancient times thin, well made glass such as this would have been something only for the elite, with ceramic being favored for most. Glass had the advantage of being inert and transparent, enabling the owner to see how much of his beverage he had left! 2-3/4"H, intact.

Provenance: Ex-private New York City, NY collection.
