Rome, ca. 1st century AD. Globular body on a flat pad base, with lathe-turned rings around foot, on the underside of the base and around the shoulders, the high-arching ribbed handle terminating below in a lion's paw on an oval handle-plate decorated with tendrils and berries, the edges beaded, the upper end with a well-modelled frontal-facing lion's head, a stylized ox skull in its mouth, the ends expanding to rotellae. 6-1/2"H. (16.5 cm), Losses as shown, but still a remarkable example!

Provenance: Ex-Sarkisian Estate, Denver, CO collection acquired in the 1960s.
