British, Ca. 1st to 3rd Century AD. The head and front legs emerging from an edged six lobed back-plate with a ring for attachment above and below, the head with incised details of the fur, pointed ears and a high-hogged mane, the snout up-turned, the mouth agape with two large upward curving canines, the two small front hooves and legs protruding from beneath the head, possibly used as a chariot mount. 5-1/2"H (14.2cm). Intact with superb patina. Custom mount. For similar mounts, one of a dog and one of a horse cf. H. Henkel, Die Römischen Bronzes aus Deutschland, III, (Bonn), figs.215, 458 & 459.

Provenance: Ex-Christie's, ex-private English collection. Found 18" deep in a ploughed up Roman road at Heworth, York, October 1985. It is however, likely to originally have been manufactured abroad. Diagram of find site paperwork and export permits included.
