(20th Century Fox, 1983) An original concept painting for Jabba the Hutt’s Rancor from “Return of the Jedi.” George Lucas’s original instructions for the Rancor to master puppet-maker Phil Tippet were entirely open-ended: “Do whatever you want, but I want a big monster in a pit.” Nilo Rodis-Jamero, Joe Johnston, Ralph McQuarrie, and others were called upon for designs. The beast went through a series of conceptual changes, with a lumpy body and insectoid mandibles originally proposed before long, muscular arms, razor-sharp claws, and a large head with an immense, gaping maw were settled upon. The beady eyes and massive fanged mouth of the final version of the creature are present in this concept painting; however, the Rancor seen on screen lacked the lizard-like scales envisioned here. The painting is accomplished in pencil, ink, and gouache with an image size of 7” x 8.25” on 8.5” x 9.25” illustration board. The artwork is in very good condition with light discoloration around the edges from age and a light crease in the upper right corner, neither of which affects the image.
