1 Large 18th century "REBUS" button with a rabbit. Rebus buttons are fun examples utilizing a puzzle of words and pictures to represent a particular saying. In this case this beautiful and chatoyant colorful 18th century example is engraved with the words "J'AIME SON" meaning "I LIKE HER" or "I LOVE HER" we believe with the help of several astute French enthusiasts in this case translates to "I LOVE WITHOUT" OR J'AIME SANS" as the sound of both is the same. These words are sitting atop an engraved depiction of a rabbit, WHICH IN FRENCH IS LAPIN. With that said Lapin sounds the same as LA PEINE which is translated to TROUBLE. Keep in mind rebus examples are not always literal, they are puzzles meant to be deciphered and thought about so literally translating them is not suggested. Putting it together it seems that the rebus meaning in this case would suggest "I LOVE WITHOUT TROUBLE or EFFORT". A great button in excellent condition with a beautiful framed border. The colors in the shell are so striking with their pink and green chatoyancy.
