A Rare Document Signed by King Alfonso V Of Aragon ( "The Magnanimous") King of Aragon, Naples and Sicily (ruled Aragon from 1416-1458). Manuscript Letter Signed " Rex Alfonsus," in Latin, 1 page large oblong 4to, Valencia, Ma 8, 1427, The letter confirms financial arrangements concerning revenues from the episcopality of Segorbe: the "renting out " agreed to for one year by Jacques Gerard, canon and precentor of Segorbe, to Michel Frayre and Gabriel de Montesono, inhabitants of that place, of the revenues of the episcopal benefice or manse of Segorbe and St. Marie d'Albarrazino; providing the sum of 4000 florins in the currency of Aragon. "Renting out" was the farming of the ecclesiastical revenues (revenues here meaning a source of income), a practice normally agreed to by the holders of benfices in Spain in the 15th century. Alfonso's nickname referred to his cultural patronage, particularly in the areas of architecture and scholarship; among other contributions, he founded the superb collection of manuscripts at Naples (where he established his court permanently in 1443)called the Bibleioteca del Rey de'Aragona. he was also a skillful, ambitious soldier and politician who waged a long struggle to obtain Naples. An excellent example of a rare autograph in fine condition.
