Signed in an old hand underneath the bottom shelf R. Byrne/White Plains. Byrne was an Irish immigrant to Dobbs Ferry and White Plains, New York, known to have worked with the architect Alexander Jackson Davis crafting chairs for the Lyndhurst mansion. A June 2, 1895 article from the New York Times about the village of White Plains mentions how, circa 1845, Byrne was the town cabinetmaker and part-time undertaker. 32 1/2"h x 32 1/4"w x 15 1/4"d The left-side spindle peg with an old repaired break, the right-hand spindle cracked but stable.
