A REGENCY carrara MARBLE MANTELPIECE
Possibly Irish, circa 1810 The rectangular breakfront compound molded shelf above a frieze decorated with alternating anthemia and bell-flowers, issuing from a band of acanthus S-scrolls, the molded aperture flanked by scrolling volute jambs each headed by a carved lion mask and raised on a squared plinth 61 X 82 X 11 IN. (155 X 208 X 28 CM)
$75,000-95,000
The saccharoid crystalline limestone that was used to make this chimney-piece was mined from Carrara in Italy, a quarry that was first discovered and worked in antiquity.
A chimneypiece with identical volute carved jambs is known (Guy Cadogan Rothery, English Chimney-pieces, Their Design and Developments from the Earliest Times to the Nineteenth Century. London, 1927, pl. 158)
