A RARE division one pictorial natural material button
1 Large late 18th century example of 2 Cocks fighting.?
We have once again been entrusted to bring you another of these exquisite and rare natural material pictorial buttons from the consignor as they were pleased that the button collectors appreciated the ones sold from the set in our November 2024 auction. This one constitutes the only further example they will be selling in our auction so if you want to acquire one of these rare examples now is your opportunity. This very rare example comes from a rare set of only 6 buttons (EACH example a different scene of the two cocks fighting) from the late 18th century. It is made of natural material, it is engraved and pigmented in black and colors. The depiction is of two Cocks in a fight, which was a very popular sport in olden times but was made illegal in Great Britain and other areas around 1800. It was also popular in the US and is also illegal here except that some private sporting events still take place in parts of the US. This excellent and fine condition example is as we said only one of 6 to ever be found like this so don't pass this extremely rare button up. This button has not been seen for sale since the 1940's and came from a set owned by the late Eugenie Lydecker who was a President of the New Jersey Button Society in the 1950's.Her collection was sold in 1980 at auction but this was not in the auction as it came to us from the granddaughter of Mrs. Kenneth Lydecker. If you want to own a pierce of history and fine craftsmanship of the late 18th century, this is an opportunity to do so, We cannot stress enough the rarity and fine condition of this example. The example in our November 2024 auction hammered at over $2000.
