Known as a Black Saber, the characteristic open hilt composed of a broad steel guard with flattened and profiled quillon terminals, long, slender langets and a thumbring and cylindrical steel pommel with handforged chain knuckleguard, the wooden grip with fingerstalls covered in black leather. The shallowly-curved blade with narrow fuller and pronounced raised backedge and tapered thrusting tip, etched at the forte on either side with vegetal panels, Turk?s heads and Latin inscriptions, including VINCERE AUT MORI (Conquer or Die.) Late 17th century. Wear to grip, minor pitting to blade. Overall length 87.5 cm.
