A RARE ENGLISH DELFT PUNCH BOWL, ATTRIBUTED T
A RARE ENGLISH DELFT PUNCH BOWL, ATTRIBUTED TO BRISLINGTON, circa 1680-90, of squat ovoid form, with a raised circular foot rim, painted in blue to the interior and exterior with 'China men in grasses', decoration featuring two standing figures, one holding a flintlock rifle, among formal rocks and plants, copied from Chinese transitional porcelain, the interior with a border of whorls and four foliate motifs, (section of foot rim lacking, small patches of glaze lacking and flaking), 34cm diameter x 15.4cm high. Illustrated *Similar figure and landscape decoration is seen on a posit pot, attributed to Brislington, sold by Phillips Auctioneers, London, lot 159, sale 10th December 1997. Another example of a Brislington delft punch bowl dated 1681 and bearing the arms of The Coopers Company is housed in the Victoria and Albert Museum. In particular the stylised trees emerging from behind rocks and the whorled border to the interior are very similar, see Michael Archer, the tin glazed earthenware of the British Isles, V & A collection catalogue. Illustration F3. The flintlock rifle held by the figure on our bowl is probably a misinterpretation of a Chinese musical instrument. ESTIMATE: £1000 - 1500 1000-2,499.99
