A stunning pottery figure from the Nayarit culture in western Mexico and dating to the Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 B.C. - 250 C.E.Depicted is a male warrior, holding a club in front with both hands. His upper body is protected by a barrel-shaped armour, which is decorated with incised lines in an intricate geometric pattern. The same pattern is visible on his double-horned helmet. Around his neck a double strand necklace is shown, which was dented or pierced twice on all four sides. In addition the figure has multiple ornaments in his ear lobes. The warrior is shown seated on a two legged stool. He has a long and puffy face with a large nose, almond shaped eyes, and a half-open mouth, all typical of the Nayarit style, as are the short arms.Nayarit elites were buried in tombs consisting of a chamber at the bottom of a deep pit. They were usually accompanied by grave goods including ceramic vessels and sculptures. Among the latter were often statues of warriors, intended to protect the deceased. Height 31.8 cm. Mineral deposits on the surface; the head has been reattached, otherwise in excellent condition; a label attached to the back by a previous owner, reading "??415 Nayarit seated warrior, protoclassic, 100 B.C. A.D. 25(0)". A beautiful example with a very warm colour.Provenance: Dutch private collection, acquired from Christie's Paris, sale 5088 of 14 June 2004, lot 395; previously French private collection.
