(Philco, 1929) A Philco lowboy style Neutrodyne 8-tube battery radio, model 87. The 1920s marked the beginning of the golden age of radio. As technology improved and became more accessible, radios became a common feature in American homes. Millions of households tuned in daily to listen to their favorite nationally broadcast comedians, serials, and soap operas from emerging networks such as NBC and CBS. Despite the initial high price of $119—equivalent to about $2,250 today—over 40% of American households owned a radio by the early 1930s, with that number doubling by the end of the decade. This eight-tube radio did not work when tested and requires servicing to function. Measuring 26.75” x 14” x 40.25” tall, the radio displays in good condition with ring stains on the top, scratches, chips, scuffs to the finish, one missing tube, and the grill cloth is torn and nearly entirely missing. Due to size and weight, special shipping arrangements are required. Please inquire before bidding.
