A Pair of European Decorated Arita Porcelain Flasks (Tuskuri), the porcelain late 17th century], of slightly tapering square section, the sides printed with four chinoiserie scenes (clockwise), a blue robed official seated upon a terrace, a red jacketed servant bringing a tray to a standing dignitary in spotted red gown, two attendants bearing a fan and a wrapped object (jin), and a man and woman in a garden beneath an eccentric parrot, the man beseeching with hand outstretched (partially corresponding to the first panel), {21.5cm} (one flask traversed by a "Y" crack descending from the spout, affecting one facet, other with a linear crack crossing two facets, both spouts damaged, the somewhat dry blue and black enamels somewhat thin/fugitive) {See illustration} *The chinoiserie designs closely echo figural subjects seen on Chinese blue and white exportware of the Kangxi period, ie of the late 17th/early 18th century. The identical arrangement and rotational order of the panels suggests more than a one-off production. The enamel palette, with its lime yellow, iron red, blue, turquoise and pea green plus a dry black is very idiosyncratic and in its imperfection suggests the earlier part of 18th century rather than later, when the development of European porcelains saw a rapid improvement in ceramic enamelling. This in turn ties in with the porcelain body which is typical for the late 17th century and early 18th century. Lacking any underglaze blue it suggests the bottles were imported in the white and decorated in one of the many porcelain decorating workshops active in Holland £500-1000
