A Pair of Chinese Sui Dynasty Chinese Ladies of Fashion
China, ca.581-618 AD/CE. This charming pair of court ladies is mostly straw glazed with areas left unglazed where originally polychrome was applied. The white slip remains and some very slight trace of color. The straw glazing in the Sui Dynasty was the origin of Celadon, so admired later. Though the two beautiful ladies are Chinese, their elegant draping shows the western influence due to the silk route. Chinese women enthusiastically adopted foreign dress, fashion and hair styles. This graceful pair certainly make a fashion statement. Ref. “Seeking Immortality, Chinese Tomb Sculpture from the Schloss Collection” by Janet Baker. Dimensions: 8-3/4”H (22.2cm)

Provenance: From an old English collection .
