A PAIR OF south ITALIAN ROCOCO SILVERED CONSOLE TABLES naples, Circa 1755 Each eared serpentine marble top with molded edge above a conforming apron with an ornate basket weave centered by a shell issuing flowers, the sides similarly-decorated, each corner set with a rocaille cabochon atop a molded cabriole leg with pendant husks and acanthus-sheathed feet 35 X 531/2 X 27 in. 89 X 136 x 70 cm - $60,000-90,000 The form of this pair of tables is typical of mid-18th century Neapolitan consoles: The sinuous, curving legs are headed by large leaf and shell motifs and the aprons are carved with naturalistic foliage, dominated by bold rocaille clasps. A similar example is seen in a portrait of King Ferdinand IV at the age of nine, by Anton Raphael Mengs (The Golden Age of Naples; Art and Civilization under the Bourbons, 1734-1805. Ex. cat. The Detroit Institute of Art/The Art Institute of Chicago, 1981, Vol. II, p. 174, fig. 63). Another related gilt varnished silvered example from the Palazzo Reale, Caserta is known (Civita del 700 a Napoli; 1734-1799. Naples, 1980, Vol. II, p. 195, fig. 435).
