A PAIR OF SOUTH ITALIAN BAROQUE PIETRe DURE-INLAID TABLE TOPS Naples, early 17th century Each of rectangular form centrally inlaid with a medallion of white marble and red jasper centered by a quatrefoil of yellow jasper and issuing further medallions inlaid with foliate shaped panels of yellow jasper, alabaster and white marble within an arabesque framework above a cushion molded border, inlaid throughout with black and white marble, brecchiated serpentine marble and Spanish brocatelle 47 X 281/2 in. 120 X 72.5 cm - $120,000-180,000 Provenance 2nd Earl of Normanton (1778-1868), Somerley, Ringwood, Hampshire. And thence by descent. Somerley was designed by Samuel Wyatt from 1792-95 and built by the Salton manufacturer, Daniel Hobson, for Charles Agar, Archbishop of Dublin, made Viscount Somerton in 1800 and Earl of Normanton in 1806. The collections there are almost entirely due to Welbore Ellis Agar (1778-1868), 2nd Earl, who bought Somerley from Henry Baring in 1828. The 3rd Earl, who succeeded in 1868 and became Lord Somerton of Somerley in 1873, had Somerley enlarged by William Burn from 1868-70.
