<B>A PAIR OF SIOUX QUILLED AND BEADED HIDE TIPI BAGS<BR></B></I><BR>c. 1890<B><BR></B></I> <BR>decorated across the front with stripes of natural and dyed porcupine quills and tufts of red-dyed chicken feathers against a hide ground, the sides and flap decorated with classic rectangular motifs, sinew sewn and lane-stitched in various shades of opaque and translucent beads, trimmed with metal cones and red-dyed horsehair<BR><I><BR>Lengths: 20 ½ inches each<BR></B></I><BR> <B>Condition Report:</B> In overall good to very good condition. Both bags: hide with usual wear, including moderate soiling and some stiffness. Beading extant but slightly dirty in areas. Bag one: rust-brown stain of approx. 5/8” x 1/2" near bottom of bag; some black pigment marks of approx. 1-1/8” x 3-7/8” near and on bottom. Five rust-colored pinholes around bottom sides. Various rust-colored and brown spots on bag flap, including an approx. 3/4" diagonal mark and an approx. 5/8” horizontal mark. Back has approx. two pairs of nail-sized holes, an approx. 1-1/4” x 5/8” rust-colored stain, and an approx. 1” x 1” circular (native?) repair. A soil of approx. 5-1/2” x 3-3/4” on back, along with other smaller soiled areas. Horizontal rows of porcupine quilling faded, with some abrasion and losses, including an approx. 1-3/8” portion of row, 1” x 3/8” section, and an approx. 1” portion of row. Chicken feathers full with nearly full loss of approx. four ornaments.
