In private villas and palaces, the Empire style continued to enjoy popularity in Italy despite the lingering mixed feelings about the Napoleonic regime. During the 1820s the Sienese architect and cabinet-maker Agostino Fantastici was designing furniture that incorporated Classical and Egyptian motifs of a strongly Empire flavor. A very similar chair, probably by Fantastici, but without the inlaid decoration and with carved leaves at the base of each arm, is known (Private Collec-tion; Enrico Colle, Il mobile Impero in Italia. Milan, 1998, no. 62, p. 188).
