LITERATURE: E. McParland. 'Lissadell, Co. Sligo', Country Life, 6 October 1977, p.915 (illustrated in situ).
Originally from a set of twelve, these hall chairs, with their pelta-form back supported by Roman acanthus-scrolled brackets, are clearly inspired by George Smith's pattern for 'Hall Chairs' published in The Cabinet Maker and Upholsterer's Guide of 1826-7.
A related single Irish hall chair, sold at Christie's South Kensington, 7 June 2000, lot 439, was interestingly stamped twice by the journeyman chairmaker 'C. Turner', who is recorded as working for Strahan, Dublin.
