Designed in the restrained Grecian taste, these chamber tables form part of an extensive group of slightly varying sizes supplied by Williams & Gibton for the principal bedroom apartments at Lissadell (see also lot 133, 226, 227, 235A, 236). Of these, only some are stamped, whilst others bear the characteristic five digit numbering, and some 'pairs' even display identical order numbers even though they vary slightly in size, as on this pair. With their dependence on the lustrous figuring of the timber and subtle 'reeded' embellishment, these 'chamber' tables reveal the debt of Williams and Gibton to the cabinet-making firm of Messrs. Gillows of London and Lancaster. A sketch for a closely related table, with hinged inkwell to the back appears in the Gillows General Sketch Book, no. 344 144, p. 11 (City of Westminster Archive Centre). Four such tables were supplied in 1811 to T.W. Egerton for Tatton Park, Cheshire, and each were described as 'a Mahogany Chamber Writing Table, 3ft. long on turned reeded legs, two drawers...5 Guineas' (N. Goodison and J. Hardy, 'Gillows at Tatton Park, Furniture History, 1970, pp. 28, 30, 32 and 35, pl. 16B). Four that are stamped by Gillows and for which the bill exists were originally at Parlington Hall, also supplied in 1811, and one of these is now at Lotherton Hall (C. Gilbert, Furniture at Temple Newsam House and Lotherton Hall, Leeds, 1978, vol. II, p. 381, no. 502). A further example, supplied in 1813 to William Powlett, 2nd Baron Bolton for Hackwood Park, Hampshire, was sold in Christie's House sale, 20-22 April 1998, lot 366 (£12,650).
