Portugal, 19th century Each molded top with serpentine front decorated with acanthus scrolls, tulips centered on flowerheads, strapwork and half-paterae on a punched ground and within flat bandings and leaf-carved molded edges, each conforming frieze fitted with a shallow drawer above a shaped apron, outlined with a molding and centered by a shell, the cabriole legs also outlined, decorated at the knee with Pan masks, and draped acanthus leaves and raised on claw and ball feet 29 X 44 X 19 IN. The strong early 18th century English and Northern European tradition of walnut furniture decorated with carved giltwood and gesso was fueled, in part, by the return to Portugal in 1693 of the widowed Catherine of Braganza. She brought with her large quantities of English furniture which created a fashion for simpler forms and brought to a close the style for heavy Baroque turning and carving of the previous century
