Circa 1780 One fitted as a commode, the other as a buffet, each with rectangular shallow breakfronted and eared top with quarter-veneered center set with a stylized flowerhead within inlaid triple line decoration forming geometric patterns at each corner and chevron border, above a dentiled underedge, three fluted frieze drawers and two long drawers, the latter and the sides decorated as the top, and an urn mount to the apron, flanked by flaring fluted Corinthian columns, on tapering fluted square feet headed by guttae 36 X 541/2 X 25 in. (91.5 X 138.5 X 63.5 cm)

$180,000-220,000 Provenance Collection of Sir John Wyndham Edward Hanmer, 8th Baronet, The Mere House, Hanmer, Shropshire.

Pairs of commodes of this type were often made en suite with a secretaire and placed in reception or drawing rooms where the function of the buffet commode was to act as a rinsing facility for glasses during entertainment. The interior was fitted with a pewter cistern and bowl with drying shelves above. A very similar commode is in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (World Furniture, Ed. Helena Hayward. London 1965, page 169, fig. 638).
