A PAIR OF CLASSICAL REEDED MAHOGANY SCROLL END WINDOW SEATS, Baltimore, circa 1810-1820. (2) - 48 in. wide. In the manner of William Camp (1773-1822). William Camp was Baltimore's most prominent and sought after cabinetmaker. Window seats, or small backless settees, were first widely used in Maryland during the late eighteenth century. In "The London Chairmaker's and Carver's Book of Prices for Workmanship," 1808 edition, pieces were described as "Grecian Stools...with bolster scrolls at each end." There are known Baltimore painted window seats in the late Federal Empire style although the Grecian, Regency-derived design in mahogany may be unique. The elements of the design are similar to other peices from Baltimore of the period. A similar pair of benches attributed to William Camp can be seen in "Furniture in Maryland, 1740-1940", by gregory R. Weidman, page 201, fig 179. $20,000-30,000 The property of Elizabeth du Pont Bayard Weedon
