A. P. Casey Sub-Inspected Colt Single Action Cavalry Revolver

Manufactured in 1875 and inspected by Ordnance Sub-Inspector A.P. Casey (APC). The underside of the barrel, cylinder side and rear face, trigger guard, back strap and right grip heel are stamped with a tiny "C" sub-inspection mark. A small "C" is stamped in the hammer well above the firing pin hole and a "J" sub-inspection mark is stamped on the barrel next to the serial number. The script initials "APC" are stamped in a rectangle on the lower left side of the grip. The revolver has the First Style ejector housing with barrel boss, early "bullseye" ejector rod head, and cavalry style hammer with cone shaped firing pin and elongated bordered knurling on the spur. The barrel, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap are blue and the hammer, loading gate and frame are casehardened. The one-piece walnut grip is oil-finished. The top of the barrel is marked with the First Style "script" address "+COLT'S P T. F. A. MFG. Co HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.+" flanked by slanted crosses. A "P" proofmark is stamped on the underside of the barrel next to the sub-inspection mark and on the side of the cylinder. The full serial number, "18750" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "8750" is stamped on the cylinder and written in pencil on the back strap inlet of the grip. The barrel is stamped with the partial serial number "8643". The left side of the frame is marked with the early two line, two patent dates followed by the "U.S" property mark. The inside of the loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "841". Most of the Casey sub-inspected single action revolvers were originally issued to U.S. cavalry regiments on the frontier and subsequently overhauled and reissued. "Colt Cavalry and Artillery Revolvers" by Kopec and Fenn states that Cavalry Model Single Action serial no. 18732 was issued to C Troop, 5th Cavalry in 1886 and serial no. 18787 was issued to I Troop, 7th Cavalry in 1888. Serial No. 18749 was issued to the New York Militia around 1895. This revolver appears to be a U.S. cavalry issue pistol that was overhauled c. 1895 and retained all of the original components except the barrel.

Very good as refinished and modified (see above). The revolver retains 75% of the blue finish with thinning on the ejector housing, some muzzle and high edge wear, a drag line on the cylinder and a smooth gray patina on the grip straps. The frame, hammer and loading gate retain 85% of the silvering and thinning case colors. The grip is very good with a coat of old varnish applied with minor edge wear. The cartouche is legible. The top line of the patent date marking on the side of the frame is partially unreadable, otherwise the markings are clear. The action is crisp and fully functional. This is a solid example of an 1875 production A.P. Casey Inspected Colt Single Action Cavalry Model revolver.
