A true trail saddle, it is aptly named, “Pride of the West.” High quality, heavily tooled, and built to take the rigors of daily use. Slick fork, Cheyenne roll cantle, Sam Stagg rigging and Spanish laced, it is well- marked and in beautiful condition with great color and finish. Original horsehair and tooled leather cinch. Marked on each side under the side jockeys, "A. Ortmayer & Son, Maker, Chicago, ILL", with "Pride of the West", "Double Hide Cover" and "300". Impressive in design, execution and size. Full double rigged with a 15" seat. The A. Ortmayer mark dates it between 1882 and 1890.

An undated magazine clipping accompanies the saddle, quoting the then-current owner: “My father told me the saddle was made for former Montana Governor John Hugo Aronson… but it is impossible to verify this information.”
