A North ITALIAN ROCOCO POLYCHROME-DECORATED CENTER TABLE Circa 1735 The molded cartouche-shaped top decorated with a scrolled and strapwork panel centered by an elephant with a howday, saddlecloth and head dress on an acanthus leaf pedestal, the scrolling strapwork headed by draped lambrequins with trailing garlands, and foliate sprays, the shaped and molded frieze carved with shells and raised on scrolled cabriole legs with scrolled feet 29 X 33 X 461/2 in. 74 X 84 X 118 cm - $12,000-18,000 The inspiration for the design of the top of this table is taken from the engravings of Jean Berain (1640-1711). The elements of levity and fantasy mixed with various motifs including swags, scrolls, and acanthus, all symmetrically arranged in a geometrical structure of strapwork, typifies the work of Berain. Similar Italian interpretations of his designs can be seen in the work of Giovan Francesco Giusti at the Villa Marsi, Mucca. beyond its exotic connotations, The use of an elephant is interesting as it is said to represent strength, long memory, patience, wisdom and fidelity.
