Pierrepont, Edwards. A REVIEW BY JUDGE PIERREPONT OF GEN. BUTLER’S DEFENSE, BEFORE THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, IN RELATION TO THE NEW ORLEANS GOLD. New York: Wm. C. Bryant & Co., 1865. Small 8vo, original printed wraps. 27, (1) pages. Fine. An interesting Civil War controversy involving Union General Benjamin Franklin Butler. Among other irregularities during his administration of New Orleans, Butler allegedly seized $50,000 in gold coin from Samuel Smith & Co. in 1862, ostensibly to be used for payment of soldiers. Pierrepont’s report reveals the General's possible criminal intent, as there was no record of the funds being dispersed. Sabin 62784. Ex John J. Ford, Jr. library.
