A fascinating map of Europe and the Near East at the time of the Roman Empire. This is a carte-a-figures map, with costumed figures to the side panels and city views along the top.
Despite the title, this map has six bird's-eye views of cities (Rome, Genoa, Jerusalem, Venice, Constantinople & Alexandria), and ten costume vignettes, all 17th century, not Roman era. In the sea off Ireland is a sea-battle, again with galleons rather than galleys. Engraved by Abraham Goos for Speed's Prospect of the world.
A panel set in the map gives ?A Short Declaration Of Ye Beginning Increase & Height Of Ye Romane Empire?.
Two pages of English text printed on the reverse, giving a charming description of life in the early seventeenth century of the area shown. This is a ?must have map? for all those with an interest in the Roman Empire.
