A Near Shipwreck. Interesting documents
A Near Shipwreck. Interesting documents between France and America in midst of undeclared war. An American ship Sarah & Rebecca was declared not seaworthy in a French court at Cape Francais. In 1799, it left New York bound for Curacao. The mast was destroyed, and the ship took on water due to a hole in the hull of the vessel. After reaching a port, a legal protest was made by the master, mate, and seamen. Those on board were thankful to be alive. Court proceedings in French (11 pp.) with English translation (9 pp.), 8 x 13. Both documents show legal stamp of court. An unusual example of Franco-American cooperation during uncooperative years. Fine.
