A NORTH GERMAN ROCOCO GILT-BRONZE AND GILTWOOD-MOUNTED WALNUT SECRETAIRE-CABINET Schleswig Holstein, circa 1740 The scrolled broken arched pediment centered by an acanthus spray, above a rocaille shell, coral rockwork and foliage, flanked by outset corners surmounted by asymmetrical finials, the arched molded door fitted with a rectangular plate within an acanthus leaftip ogee molding, revealing shelves, the canted corners headed by shells and rocaille-sheathed c-scrolls, the slightly bombé lower section crossbanded throughout and with molded edging, the fall front secretaire drawer enclosing pigeon-holes and straight and concave fronted drawers, the three long drawers and the secretaire drawer fitted with handles and escutcheons cast with birds and foliage, raised on splayed scrolled feet joined by an undulating scroll apron 983/4 X 473/4 X 231/2 in. 250.75 X 121.5 X 59.75 cm - $60,000-80,000 Provenance sotheby's london 29 may 1998, lot 93 Furniture of this type has traditionally been attributed to Denmark or Schleswig-Holstein/Alton, the latter belonging to Denmark during the second quarter of the 18th century.
