Gambs, E.F. THE CALIFORNIA PHILATELIST. San Francisco, 1883–97. Ten of the twelve issues published under this title, being Nos. 23–27 and 29–33 [lacking Nos. 28 and 34]. Small 8vo, self-covered. 16 to 40 pages each; illustrated. Generally very good or better, though last issue is damaged, with final leaf detached and badly chipped. A very rare and little-known publication with numismatic content among its philatelic coverage. The California Philatelist is a continuation of Gambs’s earlier St. Louis Philatelist (which was first published in 1876). Moving to a part of the country virtually devoid of either philatelic or numismatic activity apparently did not deter Gambs, who proved a pioneer in both fields. While Gambs’s publication is mostly given over to stamp coverage, interesting material on coins is sprinkled about. The first issue, dated June 1883, announces that “we were fortunate enough to secure a few uncirculated 1883 nickels; price 15 cts. each or 3 for 30 cents, post paid. Order now before they become obsolete.” Most, if not all, issues appear to have some numismatic content. Single issues are rare: a run like this is very infrequently met with.
