<B>A Monumental French Gilt Bronze and Enamel Clock</B></I><BR><BR>Unknown maker, Paris, France<BR>Circa 1864<BR>Gilt bronze and enamel<BR>Unmarked<BR>34 in. high x 31 in. wide x 14.5 in. deep<BR><BR>Depicting the Creation of the World, with three female figures holding a floral chain seated upon a cloud base, with Cupid before them; a blue enameled clock in the form of a globe surrounded by four cherubs with attributes of harvest and abundance, with an Apollo mask below, with radiating sun bursts emitting from the cloud form; on a shaped base with acanthus leaf scroll legs and chased border with fleur-de-lis flanking an armorial. Inscribed on the side <I>Gaston de Pontalba 1864</B></I>.<BR><BR>This extravagant and monumental clock appears to have been commissioned for Gaston de Pontalba, the second son of the prominent New Orleans land owner and real estate developer Baroness Micaela Almonester Pontalba.
