The ink identified officers are: Capt. William A. Thomas, Co. G., 111th PA. (WIA Lookout Mt. 11/24/63, discharged for disability 3/31/65); Capt. William C. Hay, Co. C., 111th PA. Two military vignettes of a young lieutenant and sergeant wearing the name medal as Captain McGittigen are unidentified.

The precise context of the CDVs is unknown. The 109th and 111th Pennsylvania initially served with the Army of the Potomac before going west with the 12th Corps. Both regiments were in the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division. The 107th and 150th Pennsylvania remained with Army of the Potomac for the duration. The 58th Pennsylvania was a 18th/24th Corps outfit.
