A "Mint" Item. Highly interesting account book, Lyons, Wayne County, N.Y., 1876-1903, variously, with a plethora of entries relating to rural life, including content on peppermint farming, an important product of Central New York State. "...Set mint...dig roots...to distilling 72 lbs. peppermint...distilling mint half the night, 75 ...harvesting mint crop...put mint in furrough...went to trots...." For working the entire month of Aug. 1878 on distilling mint, for example, his wages, itemized daily, totalled $37.92. 8 -1/2 x 1 2 -1/2 , approximately 121 + 3 of 385 pp. bearing entries in a neat hand in rich brown ink. Elaborately tooled suede boards with bottle-green and brown polished leather inlays, gold- and burn-stamped designs, hubbed spine. Records his purchase of a gold watch, Geneva, N.Y., for $250; "Sept. 29, 1877, Barn Buildings Burned down." On flyleaves in pencil, numerous medical remedies for horses, e.g., "for a sore from trotting on hard tracks linament." Moderate cover wear, internally fine.
