A Mersey Railway full title enamel sign from Birkenhead Central signal cabin. “Mersey Railway. SAFETY FIRST. Many Accidents Would Not Occur If The Staff, When Carrying Out Their Duties, Would KEEP IN MIND SAFETY FIRST. Central Station Birkenhead, October 1927. Joshua Shaw, General Manager & Engineer.” Red on white with a red border. 10½”x16¼”, some edge and hole wear but the letters largely unaffected. NSB. The Mersey Railway (and Birkenhead Central station) opened in 1886 to operate a line from Liverpool to Birkenhead. It remained independent until nationalized in 1948. (see Lots 376 and 494).
