*A Manual Fire-Engine, Bristow, London], the rear panel painted with the mark of the Order of Royal Exchange Assurance 1793, with 'Bristow Fecit' stamped above, now extensively restored, together with three leather covered and riveted hose sections and a copper nozzle, {160cm high, 238cm long, 92cm wide}, sold together with a plaque inscribed 'Manual Fire Engine, this fire engine was built by Bristow of London to the order of Royal Exchange Assurance in 1793 on the pattern of one designed by Newsham in 1724. In the 18th Century public fire protection was either insufficient or entirely lacking and the fire insurance companies of the day found it necessary themselves to provide fire-fighting equipment for the risks they covered. This particular appliance was given to the parish of Halesworth in Suffolk' £1500-2000
