A Madonna and Child, 17th century, depicted seated in an animated pose on a socle of clouds, the Child partly entwined in the Virgin's mantle, holding it with his left hand, the Virgin affectionately inclined towards the Child, with her left hand gracefully supporting herself on the clouds, with a masterfully executed and elaborately draped mantle around her shoulders, the dress with soft falling folds, two cherub's heads issuing from among the clouds, superb Carrara marble, minor damages to the clouds, one cherub's head, and one side of the mantle, height 47 cm. The sculpture is an outstanding work from the workshop of the Roman sculptor Ercole Ferrata (1610-1686) and may have been exectued around 1650- 60. (Er)
