<B>A MANDAN/HIDATSA QUILLED HIDE TOBACCO BAG<BR></B></I><BR>c. 1890<BR> <BR>decorated on the front with the initials “C.H.” in dyed porcupine quillwork, the reverse with a sunburst pattern, a panel of rawhide slats wrapped with porcupine quills suspended below, hide fringe along the bottom<BR><I><BR>Length: 40 inches overall</B></I> <B>Condition Report:</B> In overall fair to good condition. Hide with moderate wear and several small tears and holes. Sunburst side: one large soiled area of approx. 7-1/4” x 1-3/4”; horizontal tear of approx. 1-1/2” through large soiled spot. Approx. 5/8” diagonal ink mark on yellow quills. Hide has brown spotting through out bag and on fringe. Faded porcupine quilling (with possible exception of orange). Some quilling loss and abrasion. Beadwork whole but appears to be loose in seam area.
