<B>A MANDAN/HIDATSA BEADED BUFFALO HIDE TOBACCO BAG<BR></B></I><BR>c. 1860<BR> <BR>sinew sewn and lane-stitched in various shades of opaque and translucent beads, each side with a panel enclosing geometric elements, surmounted by feather elements and quilled horse tracks, one side with a pair of quilled pipes, a panel of rawhide slats wrapped with dyed porcupine quills suspended below, hide fringe along the bottom<BR><BR>The purple, orange, and green-dyed porcupine quillwork suggest a Mandan/Hidatsa attribution from the Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota.<I><BR><BR>Length: 31 inches overall</B></I> <B>Condition Report:</B> Overall condition good with usual wear and light soiling. Approx. 2 small puncture holes in hide. Beadwork intact. Metal cone dangles with only remnants of fiber (possibly horsehair). Quillwork with some breakage and loss. Approx. 70% quillwork loss on slats. Hide fringe intact.
