<B>An Unusual Hand-Cranked Magic Lantern Slide</B></I> (4" x 6") bearing a small bust portrait of Lincoln on one glass plate with two glass plates on top bearing a wide colorful border that when cranked produces a kaleidoscopic effect. A rare chromatrope, a handsomely painted geometrical pattern to be turned against another pane, this being the visage of Lincoln. Manipulated by an ingenious arrangement of crank pinion and gear wheels, they are made to revolve in opposite directions. Chromatrope cranks could produce single rotation against a fixed background, as the case here, or double counter-rotation of both disks of glass. They could project various brightly colored psychedelic moiré patterns up to twelve feet across. (Professional chromatrope displays in large urban theaters must have been quite mind-boggling!) The wood case bears some light wear and tear as do the glass plates, mounting remnants on verso, but overall this unusual item is in very good condition.
