Pruitt was a West Texas artist of great acclaim, listed in Texas Monthlys December 2009 issue of People Well Miss 2009 as second only to Walter Cronkite. Pruitt realized his childhood dream of becoming a cowboy early in life. He started breaking horses at age 12 and helped bring many a trail herd across the Rio Grande from Mexico to Presidio, Texas, where he and his family lived. He then worked on the Boquillas Ranch, near the Grand Canyon in Arizona. It was there that he made his first paintings on scraps of rainbow sandstone. Pruitts skilled artistry caught the attention of the then-proprietor of the historic El Tovar Hotel, and thus began his celebrated career as a premier Western painter and sculptor. Pruitts work drew from the creative river of the Great Spirit, unhampered by formal art training and the opinions of professors. He painted what he knew and loved, and it showed in his work. It is fresh, immediate and, like Pruitt, full of intensity and spirit. For most of his life, Pruitt preferred to live under the stars, sheltered only by a tepee or a gypsy wagon. During the 50 years he painted and sculpted, his personality and popularity took him to countries where many cowboys would have felt out of place. Pruitts collectors number in the thousands. In February 2009, Pruitt invited a group of friends to camp at La Junta Farm to discuss his vision of creating a nonprofit organization whose mission would combine art, history, conservation, sustainable building, and viable agriculture. The blend of these objectives will reestablish the ecological health and promote the cultural heritage of the area, or as he called it, a foundation for a better world.
