Japan, Kofun Period, ca. 3rd to 6th century AD. Modelled as a figure of a male warrior, standing upright with legs and arms apart. Face details in high relief, while lines on body are incised; hair depicted long and braided.

The Haniwa (clay image) can be traced back to the sixth century when it was a most flourishing era and further yet to the fourth century when it appears to have had its first origin. The Haniwa can be found in various figures and shapes, such as houses, horses, dogs, birds, and portraits. Though somewhat coarsely made, their bold crudeness commands a certain respect. One cannot but feel the warm affection glowing and their faces bring us into close contact with the people of that age, with their ideas concerning men, and give us a little insight into the pleasure they must have taken in living. The artistic value of the Haniwa are held in high esteem not only by Japanese, but also by many foreigners all over the world.
10"H x 6"W. Intact/excellent condition, save minor surface wear.
