<B>Andrew Jackson: A Bold and Dramatic Large Campaign Broadside From the 1828 Election.</B></I> It also features vice presidential candidate John C. Calhoun and New York gubernatorial candidate Martin Van Buren. While this ticket prevailed, Calhoun would split with Jackson over states' rights, and Van Buren would become his vice presidential running mate in 1832. The bold graphics are supplemented by small quotes praising Jackson from former New York Governor Clinton and the late Thomas Jefferson. Note that these candidates present themselves as the "Republican Ticket." At that time the political descendants of Jefferson still claimed that appellation, being the more "radical" of the parties. In 1854 a new party emerged from the ashes of the disintegrated Whigs. These Free-Soilers were the new radicals on the political scene, and they appropriated the term and titled themselves the Republican Party. The present broadside is actually the front cover of a four- page newspaper extra, published by "Signs of the Times" in Albany, New York. It was a common practice for newspapers of that era that were usually weeklies to issue special "extra" issues for important topics which arose during the week. This one, dated November 1, 1828, obviously was a last push for the political ticket supported by the paper's publishers. This is the complete edition in excellent condition. There are several extremely minor smaller water stains and an almost undetectable horizontal fold line. Overall terrific display appearance. It is printed on heavy rag paper, of a thicker grade than one customarily finds on newspapers even of this era, which undoubtedly has contributed to its fine state of preservation. If the masthead is matted out, it displays as a large and impressive early political broadside. If this piece were a blank-back broadside, it would be worth at least several times our estimated value. We have always been puzzled by most hobbyist's practice of automatically valuing posters and broadsides which have printing on the back and/or were issued by newspapers at much less than what the identical item would bring if it were a conventional blank-back issue. The present item is probably as scarce as the other broadsides of that election, and displays every bit as well. In our opinion, it presents a great value at this price level.
