<b>A JAPANESE WOODBLOCK UKIYO-E PRINT, "SUDDEN RAIN", BY HIROSHIGE</b>
Signed "Hiroshige ga" (Utagawa Hiroshige, Japanese, 1797-1858), published by Hoeido. From the series "Tokaido gojusan tsugi no uchi (The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road)"; this is one of the most well known, "Station 46, Shono Haaku – Sudden Rain at Shono`, published circa 1831-4. In this depiction, travelers are caught in a downpour near the town of Shono in Ise Province. In his 1979 book "Tokaido: Hiroshige", author Tomikichiro Tokuriki notes of this print, ""Shono" not only ranks with the best prints in this set but is one of the outstanding works in the artist`s entire life. No other print treats the fall of heavy rain so well, or expresses the beauty of that rain. One almost hears it falling." Sight size 9"h x 13 1/2"w The paper with light browning, and a small old scattershot stain in the lower margin extending 1" into image, minor color fading.
