A JAPANESE BRONZE OF A WALKING PEASANT WITH TIMBER, MEIJI PERIOD
A cast bronze and naturalistically modeled sculpture of a Japanese woodcutter or peasant figure, depicted carrying a heavy bundle of firewood across his back. The figure is shown mid-stride, wearing traditional work garments with a tied sash, gaiters, and straw sandals. In one hand, he holds a walking staff, and in the other, a hatchet is visible tucked into his sash. His expression is calm and serene, evoking the dignity of rural labor, common in Meiji bronze art.The base is an organic, naturalistic form imitating rock or earth, consistent with high-quality Meiji sculpture. The patina is a rich, deep brown with subtle highlights, and the wood bundle is delicately modeled with excellent textural variation. This type of genre figure was typical of the Meiji era (1868–1912), when Japanese bronze foundries reached international acclaim. These bronzes were frequently exported to the West as luxury items and featured in international exhibitions. It may originate from a workshop like: Miyao Company of Yokohama, Genryusai Seiya or other unnamed Tokyo School-style studios.Japan, Meiji Period, late 19th century (circa 1880–1900).Please make all inquiries before bidding. All lots are sold "as-is", refer to our T&C.Helios Auctions does not ship in-house.
