A.I. Artificial Intelligence Teddy Head Prototype
For Steven Spielberg, "A.I. Artificial Intelligence" (2001) was a true labor of love. It had been developed for years by Stanley Kubrick, a director that Spielberg worshiped. In fact, before Kubrick's untimely death, they had discussed having Kubrick produce it and Spielberg direct it. Soon after Kubrick passed away, Spielberg went to work to bring the master's vision to the screen. And he dedicated the film to the great director. The story is as emotionally charged as the back-story of how it got made. It is the story of a highly advanced robot-child, David (Haley Joel Osment) that becomes a substitute for a mother whose own son is in a coma. However when the son recovers she abandons David, who is thrust into a journey to find her and regain her love. Early on, the mother gives David her own son's robotic teddy bear, which he treasures. This is the head of one of the final prototypes of that beloved "Teddy" that represented to David, a time and place he so wants to rediscover as a real human being. Made of foam rubber, covered in faux-fur with glass eyes. (Approx. 7"x9").
