A HAND-COLORED LITHOGRAPH OF "CHLOEPHAGA CANAGICA/ALEUTIAN GOOSE", BY DANIEL GIRAUD ELLIOT
Circa 1866-1869. A beautiful ornithological print from Elliot`s two-volume "The New and Heretofore Unfigured Species of the Birds of North America", lithographed, printed and colored by Bowen & Co. Philadelphia. This is Plate 45 from Volume I. Imprinted in the l.l.c. margin "Drawn from Nature by D.G. Elliot, F.Z.S.", in the l.r.c. "Bowen & Co. lith. & col. Phila." Elliot was one of the founders of the American Museum of Natural History in New York and the American Ornithologists Union. He was also curator of zoology at the Field Museum in Chicago. He used his wealth to publish a series of sumptuous color-plate books on birds and animals, writing the text himself and commissioning artists such as Joseph Wolf and Joseph Smit, both of whom had worked for John Gould, to provide the illustrations.
