<b>A HAND-COLORED LITHOGRAPH OF "ANAS OBSCURA/DUSKY DUCK", FROM THE RARE BIEN EDITION OF JOHN JAMES AUDUBON`S "BIRDS OF AMERICA"</b>
No. 1, Plate 386, inscribed in the l.l.c. margin "Drawn From Nature by J.J. Audubon, F.R.S., E.L.S.", in the l.r.c. margin "Chromolith`y by . Bien, New York 1859". After Audubon`s death in 1851, his son John Woodhouse Audubon began work on re-issuing the elephant folio edition of "The Birds of America". To reproduce his father`s work, he chose chromolithography, a popular medium in Europe at the time, and interested Julius Bien, a lithographer who had immigrated to the United States from Germany, in the endeavor. The plates were the first large chromolithographs made in this country and are examples of good quality 19th century chromolithography; they are dated 1858, 1859, or 1860. The first and only volume was published in 1860. The Civil War ended this project in 1862 with just 15 sets of 105 prints produced. These were often "doubled", with one sheet containing two separate images. Sight size 21 1/4"h x 28 3/4"w With an old horizontal crease 4 inches down into the image, running the length of the paper, resulting in two tiny flecks of paper loss in the u.r.c. Does not affect image of birds.
