<B>An American Renaissance Revival Style Cabinet</B></I><BR><BR> Gustave Herter (1830-1898), New York, New York<BR>Circa 1858-1864<BR>Oak, rosewood, fruitwood, marble<BR>Marks: <I>G. HERTER, NEW YORK</B></I><BR>42.5 in. high x 43.37 in. wide x 22 in. deep<BR><BR>With one drawer below one drawer, the door with fruitwood border inlaid with scroll and leaf marquetry decoration and carved plaque of a woman in profile on a raised standard with carved acanthus leaves above and below, flanked by therm figures edged with gilding; the sides with therm figures at front edges and scroll on back edge, framing gilt outlined panels; shaped portoro marble top.<BR><BR>Gustave Herter immigrated to New York from Germany in 1848, and after working with other cabinetmakers including Pottier and Stymus and Tiffany, Young and Ellis, he founded his own business in 1858. In 1864, Gustave formed a partnership with his brother Christian, changing the business to Herter Brothers. Their partnership led to prominent commissions including the homes of wealthy industrialists William H. Vanderbilt, J. Pierpont Morgan and Potter Palmer, among others.<BR><BR>This particular cabinet was purchased by Philip Danforth Armour, founder of the Armour Meat Packing Company in Chicago, Illinois. At the end of the nineteenth-century the cabinet was moved to the Armour's summer estate <I>Danforth Lodge</B></I> on Oconomowac Lake in Wisconsin.
